Today we’re talking about the power of repetition in your marketing. Let me cut right to the chase and tell you why this needs to be said: You’re scared to death of annoying people. Because you’re afraid of repelling people, you aren’t attracting anyone.
Statistics show that it takes seven times for someone to come in contact with what you are offering before they decide whether or not it is right for them. Now, let’s get real about this particular statistic. It’s old research. And so much has changed in the online space in recent years (and even months!). But I can tell you this: If anything, that number (seven times) has gone WAY up.
Think about it. Everytime we get on the internet we’re inundated with information. Every single time you open your phone, I guarantee you that you are hit with some kind of an ad for a small business, right
Because of this information overload, our brains have gotten very good at filtering things out. We’ve learned to bypass stuff like information that we don’t need to conserve our energy.
If you have an audience full of ideal clients, and nobody is buying from you, it’s possible that you have not repeated how you can help them often enough.
A math problem
To fully understand just how much repetition is needed in your marketing, we’re going to do a little math. Let’s make it simple and say you typically post promotional content 4x a week. Because the algorithm is so tricky, it’s very likely that your ideal client will only see MAYBE 1 of those posts. If she actually needs to see something 7x before she’s ready to buy, that would take 7 weeks.
But let’s be real. Within those 7 times she saw your posts, she was distracted a few times. She didn’t really process the information, or give it her full attention. So it would be safe to say that it would take more like 3-4 months for her to see your promo post enough times to consider buying in.
That’s a long time, right? Especially if you have a time sensitive offer that you’re pushing, or a launch window you are using. So how do we fix this? How do we increase our chances of converting this ideal client?
We need to harness the power of repetition. Yup, just repeat yourself, over and over again. Specifically, we need to sell over and over again.
Why people aren’t buying
Before we dive into WHAT you need to be repeating we need to make sure we are clear on one thing: The reason people aren’t buying isn’t because they are fatigued by your selling. They just haven’t seen it enough or they’re not ready. We have to stop assuming that our audience doesn’t want to see what we have to offer. If you haven’t yet, go back and listen to my episode on having your offer’s back. If you don’t have that straight, repetition isn’t going to save your offer.
Three things you need to be repeating
#1. Talk about what you want to be known for.
I want you to ask yourself, “what do I want to be known for”? Not just your job title, but the heart of what you do and what you can offer. For me it’s very simple: I want to help women build a scalable business model so they can work less and make more money. I say this a LOT. This can be done a lot of different ways. We can sneak it into posts. We can just say it outright. Another way to say it is to utilize storytelling and client wins.
#2. Talk about how you can help your ideal client.
This is really about helping your ideal client see themselves in your offer. Help them understand what it will look like to work with you. Use client examples to drive this home. When you are creating content, make sure it’s circling back to how you can help your ideal client specifically.
Explaining the transformation is great, but it isn’t enough. Your audience wants to understand how you are going to get them there. I’m talking about details and descriptive, specific examples so they can see themselves IN the transformation.
#3. Talk about your offers.
Okay, so now your audience knows who you are, what you do, and they understand how you can help them specifically. What we don’t want is for them to have to HUNT to find out what type of packages you offer and what your programs or services are. You have to talk about your offers. You need to rotate through your product or service suite and spend a good chunk of time to really repeat yourself on one specific offer. My recommendation is two to three weeks per offer.
We just can’t assume that people are aware of what we offer. We can not assume that they’ve been to our website, or listened to the story that we did last month about it. The power of repetition will come into play if you just get consistent in talking about your offers intentionally.
Clarity is everything.
If you can create a clear path that follows these steps, you will make more sales:
- How you can help them,
- How they can work with you,
- What the steps are and what they can expect when they say “yes!” to working with you.
Ask yourself, is this clear enough? How can I make this MORE clear? How can I make this simpler? A confused mind will likely click away.
Patience is a virtue.
It takes time for momentum to build. This is why you need to be repeating yourself. Here’s a quick recap: We’re going to repeat what we want to be known for. Our ideal clients won’t have to guess how we can help them specifically. We are going to talk about and repeat our offers on a cycle. And through all of this, we need to remember that clarity is the key.
