What to Do When Nothing Is Working

You’re showing up. You’re posting, emailing, creating content, trying new strategies — and still, crickets. Sound familiar? “I’m doing everything and nothing is working” is one of the most common things I hear from entrepreneurs, and I get it. I’ve said it myself. But here’s the truth nobody wants to tell you: doing everything you’re capable of doing is not the same as doing everything your business actually needs. And until you understand that distinction, you’re going to keep spinning your wheels.

Let’s talk about what’s actually going on — and what you need to do instead.

“Doing Everything” Isn’t the Same as Doing the Right Things

When you say you’re doing everything, what you really mean is you’re doing everything within your current capacity — your time, your energy, your bandwidth. And I respect that. But that’s very different from doing everything required to make your specific business grow. Every business is different. What you need to do depends on what you’re selling, who you’re selling to, how much time you actually have, and where you are in your business journey. The math has to map. You cannot expect to build a six-figure business giving it 10 hours a week of visibility and marketing, especially not in today’s market.

Scattered Efforts Are Killing Your Results

I had a client come to me feeling exhausted and defeated — she felt like she’d tried everything to get leads. When we actually broke it down, the problem wasn’t effort. It was that her efforts were scattered. A little of this, a little of that, never enough concentrated energy on any one strategy to see real results. She was always marketing, always trying, but nothing was getting traction because nothing was getting enough runway. When we shifted to one focused strategy — identifying local businesses, building a targeted list, and systematically reaching out — things started to move. That’s what actually doing the work looks like.

Strategy Needs Time — and So Does Patience

Before you pivot, you have to give a strategy enough time to work. If you sent 30 warm emails and declared the strategy a failure, that’s not a failed strategy — that’s an incomplete experiment. We know the average conversion rate is around 1%. That means you need to send at least 100 to 200 emails before you can even start evaluating whether the approach is working. If it’s still not landing after that, then yes — we look at the subject lines, the content, the flow. We do the detective work. But jumping ship too early is one of the biggest reasons entrepreneurs feel like nothing works.

You Can’t Build an Audience by Dabbling

One of the most common questions I get is: how do I get visible to bigger audiences? And the answer is real, unglamorous work — pitching yourself to podcasts, showing up as a guest expert in communities, networking with intention. But when I tell people that, they send 10 pitches and give up. You are not owed anyone’s attention. There is so much noise out there, and you have to fight for it. The same goes for social media. I’ve seen people say Instagram is their platform — but they’re only posting three to four times a week, skipping stories, not engaging, not going live. If you’re going to commit to a platform, actually commit. Use everything it has to offer.

Pick a Lane and Go All In

Here’s my challenge for you: if you feel like nothing is working and you’ve tried everything, pick one thing and go all in on it for 30 days. If you have extra time and capacity, you can layer in a second strategy. But if you’re time-poor — and most of us are — one focused, intentional effort will always outperform five scattered ones. Master that one thing. Pull every lever it has to offer. Then, once it’s working, expand. That’s how you build momentum.

The Mindset Piece You Can’t Ignore

I’m going to say this with love, because I’d say it to my best client and my own sister: your business is not going to grow on its own. You are not owed consistent revenue and momentum just because you’ve been showing up for five years. The online space evolves constantly — strategies that worked two years ago may not work today, and that’s just the reality of what you signed up for. You have to keep evolving, keep adjusting, keep doing the money-making activities consistently. If something isn’t working, that’s information — not a verdict. Get curious, do the detective work, and keep going.

The Bottom Line

“Nothing is working” usually means one of three things: you’re spreading yourself too thin, you’re not giving strategies enough time to prove themselves, or the strategy you’re using isn’t aligned with what your specific business and audience actually need. The fix isn’t to do more — it’s to do the right things, with focus, with patience, and with a willingness to evolve. You have a solid offer. You have the drive. Now it’s time to get strategic about where you put your energy.
