Your Vision and Why It Matters

Every business owner should have a vision for their LIFE and a vision for their BUSINESS. These two visions should intersect and work together to get you closer to the life you want to live. Today I’m going to dive into why your vision is important, and why YOU should care.

Typically, when you first start your business, you probably weren’t thinking about the big picture. You were understandably thinking about the weeks and months in front of you, and the amount of money you needed to make.

But now that you are growing your businesses and creating sustainable businesses that are going to last a lifetime, it’s vitally important to have a clear vision for your life and a very, very clear vision for your business.

A vision for your life

When we talk about a vision for your life, it’s really important to understand that it’s NOT about getting it exactly right and mapping out an exact path for your life. It IS about just allowing yourself to think about what you really desire and intentionally thinking and dreaming BIGGER.

Developing the vision for your life requires you to go inward and start asking yourself the questions that allow you to really connect to yourself and what you desire. There may be areas of your life or in your relationships where you’ve consciously or unconsciously determined that “this is as good as it gets”. That creates a situation where you are unwilling and unable to push to get what you want.

We’re going to look at your life through several different lenses, or buckets, and that will really help us crystalize what we want each aspect of our lives to look like.

Health

I want you to think about your health. Think about your mental health and your physical health. What would it look like for you to be living a 10 out of 10? Really spend some time envisioning what that would look and feel like.

Relationships

When we start to look at our relationships, it’s helpful to break this down even further: Your parents, your partner, your children,  your siblings, and so on.

What would it look like to have a 10 out of 10 relationship? This is about developing an awareness of what it is that you need, want and desire. As that happens, you become less and less available for not having what you want and desire. It’s not easy to get to that point, but boy is it worth it!

Location

Think about your physical location. Where you live, and where you call home. Is it fulfilling to you? Again, what would a 10 out of 10 look like for you? What would be the optimal location for you? Are you living that right now? Or could there be room for improvement? Where do you think you would thrive?

Money

What would it look like to experience financial freedom? This could look different for everyone, but I want you to get specific! There is a really big difference between financial relaxation and financial freedom.

To me, financial relaxation means you are not worried about what’s in the bank. You’re able to go on vacations, treat yourself to luxury things like massages and going out to eat frequently. You can go on mini shopping sprees when you feel like it, and splurge on generous gifts.

And then there’s financial freedom. To me,  financial freedom means that you have enough money that you’re able to do whatever you want, because you have so much money that you’re no longer making decisions based on the amount of money that it’s going to make you or cost you.

This is an important distinction and something for you to think about. What would financial relaxation vs. financial freedom look like in your day-to-day life?

Career

Whether you have a business or a career, the question is the same: How could this be a 10 out of 10 for me?

What would make me feel the MOST fulfilled and happy in my current situation? Here’s some of the questions you need to ask and answer:

  • What would it mean for you to love every aspect of what you do professionally?
  • What would it feel like to be fulfilled from the work that you are doing every day?
  • What would it feel like if work didn’t really feel like work?
  • What would your optimal workday look like?
  • How many hours are you working a week?
  • How many hours are you working a day?
  • What does it look like to take time off?

All of this starts with admitting that you want it.

A vision for your business

There is obvious overlap here with your “career” vision, because if you own your own business, you’re in charge of changing the things you say you don’t like or want. So let’s jump right into the questions you need to consider:

  • Who am I working with?
  • What am I offering?
  • How am I making money?
  • How many hours am I working?
  • Do I have team members? Am I working solo?
  • Do I have courses and programs?
  • Do I have an agency?
  • What is my role?
  • How much money am I making per day, per week, per month?
  • How many people am I interacting with each week?

We’re not here to play small. We’re here to play dangerously big.

How your life and business vision intersect

Here’s the bottom line: The decisions that we are making in our businesses should be lining up with the vision that we have for our life.

Your business should support your life’s vision. You can’t have a goal to only work 10 hours a week in your life’s vision, and then create a business that requires you to work 60 hours a week. If there’s no clear pathway for decreasing your work hours (because sometimes it’s a process!), then you have visions that are incompatible and that needs to be addressed.

A challenge

As you work through your business vision, I’m challenging you to put that through the filter of your life’s vision.

When we do that, we create a business that is truly aligned.

Don’t stop wanting. You shouldn’t stop, don’t edit yourself. Don’t mute yourself. Don’t convince yourself that you are asking for too much or you want too much.

This isn’t about greed. I can and do sit in gratitude for everything that I have accomplished and everything that I have AND also know that there’s more and that I’ve been created to accomplish more.

An invitation

For the first time ever, I’m opening up spots to the public for an all inclusive retreat I’m hosting in September!

This retreat is going to be all about connection. In addition to amazing food, great fellowship, fun in the sun, and a whole lot of pampering – we’re going to be working through our vision, our goals, and heading home with clarity, purpose, and confidence. I’ve got lots of payment options for you, and you should check it out here!
