How to Ramp Up Your Motivation

How to ramp up your business motivation

Today we’re talking about motivation … or should I say lack thereof. If you want to grow your business, you want to feel motivated, but most of the time you just don’t, this is for you!

There are a couple shifts we can make to help ramp up your motivation, but before we really dive into the little tips and tricks I’ve got for you guys, I have something to say: It’s unrealistic to be motivated all the time.

So let’s just normalize that right out of the gate. It’s completely normal to not feel motivated sometimes. At least 50% of the time you are relying on discipline and your habits to do the things you need to do.

There are a lot of outside factors that contribute to whether or not we’re feeling motivated or not on a particular day. This means we cannot rely on motivation alone to grow our businesses.

BUT, feeling motivated is ideal, right? We would rather have MORE days feeling energized and excited to get to work than days we DON’T feel that way. So let’s talk about a few strategies and tips that might help you with that.

Strategy #1: Troubleshooting your motivation

Sometimes we don’t feel motivated because there is something not quite right in our business. If you are perpetually feeling unhappy with your business then there’s a really good likelihood that there’s something out of alignment in your business, and it’s time to look at that.

You are not stuck. You may feel stuck, but you’re not stuck. There’s always a way to change the things that just aren’t right, and always a way to turn the dial in your business. There’s no need for you to trudge through. Take inventory of your business and identify areas that are particularly difficult or that you always dread.

Strategy #2: Get Clarity

Lack of motivation often stems from not being clear on what we want, where we’re going, what the next steps are. It’s hard to sit down at the computer and feel motivated to do the work that you need to do when you are not even really quite sure what the work is, right?

You need a plan. You need to know where you are headed and why you are headed there. When you have that, it’s much easier to feel motivated around working. Do you have a plan that supports the goals that you have for yourself and in the short and long-term?

If you’re a little hazy on what the next year looks like or the two years looks like, don’t beat yourself up about that.  Start with the next three months. If that seems like too big of a jump, then start with one month. What’s the goal at the end of the month?

Create a plan around that goal, step by step  and day by day. Put daily actions into your calendar so that when you sit at your desk in the morning, you know exactly what you’re working on. It’s difficult to find motivation if you’re unclear where to put your energy.

Strategy #3: Action

Hard truth: You have to take action sometimes in order to feel motivated. Now, this can be tough, because when I don’t feel motivated, I don’t wanna take action. This is where discipline needs to show up. It’s time to push past that discomfort, to push past everything in you that’s screaming “I don’t wanna do this!” and do it anyway

Nothing revs up your motivation and brings life and momentum back into your business better than action. Action builds confidence and momentum, and confidence and momentum fuels motivation. When we take action on the things that we know are going to tick the needle toward our goals, guess what?

You will start seeing results. And results are motivating! When you see the fruits of your labor starting to pay off, and your goals reached, motivation is much easier to find and keep.

Closing Thoughts

You’re a business owner, and I’m going to assume that you take your business very seriously. As someone who is embodying that CEO energy, you sometimes have to do the things that you don’t want to do. That’s what business owners do in order to continually grow.

Some of the messaging that is out there can be really confusing. “If it doesn’t light your soul on fire, then something is wrong and you’re doing it wrong.” And while you should enjoy your business, this is such an unrealistic ideology.

Sometimes it doesn’t feel easy. And that doesn’t automatically mean that you are on the wrong path.
