What you need to know about building a team

Today we’re going to chat about team building. This is going to be great for you if you are in the process of hiring somebody, or if you’re thinking about hiring somebody. Maybe you have already hired someone and perhaps you’re going to need to hire more in the future. If so, this episode is for you. 

Let’s first determine whether or not you are ready to hire a team member, and talk about when it’s the right time: 

Systems and processes

You want to make sure that you have some systems and processes in place, otherwise, it is going to be a hot mess express to bring someone onto your team. The goal is for them to help you, but without systems in place,  it’s actually going to make your life so much harder. 

You need to determine what sort of help you need, what role are you trying to fill, what is the purpose, what are they going to be doing, and how are they going to be helping you. Once you’ve answered those questions, think about the systems and processes you need to get in place before you bring in a new hire. 

Employee or a contractor?

Depending on the business structure that you have, you might need an employee. Whether it’s a full-time or part-time employee, they work exclusively for you, and you have a more traditional boss/employee relationship. If you’re just starting out, it makes sense for you to go the contractor route and start small, but understand that as you grow, if what you need is an employee or someone to fill that employee role, then that’s what you should do. 

Now that you’ve got your systems in place, and you know what type of help you need, it’s time to start the hiring process:

Where do I find this person? 

The easiest way that I have found for advertising this job opportunity and sorting all of the potential hires that come in is to create an initial post. You have to be really, really clear on what you are looking for and attach a Google Form with a really thorough job description. The more information, the better. Within this form, you can ask questions that really help you get a sense of who this applicant is in the workforce.

Interviews

When I’m conducting interviews, I always like to see a lot of initiative and I want to know that they could hold a conversation and lead a conversation. I notice their attention to detail and their ability to communicate with confidence. 

Hiring a family member

Should you hire a family member?  Here are the pros: You know this person, you hopefully trust this person, you like this person, you are excited to offer an opportunity to this person. But is she going to be the best employee or contractor for you? Make sure you know what you’re getting into. While it can be great, it can also get really awkward, really fast if things aren’t up to par. 

What should I pay this person? 

It totally depends. If you are hiring a specialist they are going to be setting their rates, as they should be. If you are hiring a virtual assistant or someone in more of an executive assistant role, then you can tell prospective hires  “my budget is X”. It’s okay for you to have a budget. But remember that you usually get what you pay for. 

Training new hires

You are going to have to set aside some time to actually devote to training any new hire you bring on. You can’t expect someone who is brand new to your team and business, to know everything that they need to know. You’ve got to open up your calendar for calls and to communicate over Voxer or WhatsApp, and to review their work. Be patient and understand that this is part of the process.
