Today we’re talking about simplifying your business for growth. It’s one of my specialties because when you simplify your business, you can make more money and you can work way less. I’m so excited to share with you on this topic, so let’s get straight into it.
#1. Niche down.
To niche or not to niche, that is the big question. Niching down isn’t always the answer. But if you are wanting to make more money, and work less, then niching is going to help you do that. Why? Because it allows you to simplify your offers. It’s going to allow you to simplify your messaging and the way you deliver your offers. It’s going to simplify a lot of other things that we’re going to get into.
#2. Pare down your offers.
You do not need a Cheesecake Factory style menu, you just need a few solid offers. And if you’re like, “well, what does that look like?” Ideally, a small offer, a mid-range offer, and a high-ticket offer. This is going to be different for everybody, but it’s a way to get your ideal clients into the funnel. This will simplify so much for you in so many ways! When you don’t have a bunch of offers that you have to cycle through and sell and build awareness around, your marketing gets simplified. Your messaging gets simplified. We’re pretty clear on what we’re trying to sell and when.
#3. Evaluate how you deliver your offers.
If you are simplifying your product suite, wonderful! But you can complicate those offers by offering so many little details or delivering all these details in a complicated way. You need to find a way where what you do is repeatable or at least similar. All of your deliverables will have a similar strategy. When you have clients that are similar and you’re offering a service that is similar, everything gets easier.
#4. Create SOPs
If you are unable to take a task that you are doing for either yourself in your business or your clients, and you can’t create an SOP for it, then it is not a simple thing, it’s not something that can be duplicated. It’s very likely that every time you do that task, you’re doing something different, which is costing you time and energy. You should be able to create an SOP for almost everything in your business, from internal systems to sales systems, to client systems. If you can’t, that’s a really big red flag if we’re looking at this through the lens of simplicity. If you can’t create an SOP for it, you probably have to simplify that process.
#5. Get rid of clients that do not align.
If you are working with clients that do not fit with what you are currently offering, it’s going to split your focus. This often happens when you start to scale. You’ll have a couple clients that don’t quite fit in, and make you feel stuck. This is mentally and physically draining for you and your business. It’s time to let those clients go because it’s going to simplify everything. As coaches, mentors, or consultants, the brain power, and the emotional energy we expend is something we don’t take into account. The cost of our emotional energy when we are consistently brain switching is costing you the energy you need to really focus on the areas that you want to focus on. If I’m constantly working with a few clients that drain me, it will drain that creative energy from me, and I’m not going to be able to show up the way that I want to show up.
#6. Simplify communication channels.
When you have many forms of communication and touchpoints with your clients, it really does take a lot out of you, not only mentally, but it’s sucking away valuable hours. I have one channel that I talk to my clients on, and that is by choice. I’m not talking to one client in voice memos on DMs, one on Slack, a handful on WhatsApp, and a few on Voxer. That would be a nightmare to keep up with. I let them know how it’s going to go when they start working with me. Streamlining your communication channels is going to save you time, mental energy, and space.
#7. Touch fewer things.
If you are always sending the same email, whether that’s a follow-up email or some sort of response that you send repetitively, make a canned email for it. If you have to send out the same contract and you have to edit it every single time, figure out a way that you can auto-populate some of that stuff. Of course, there’s going to be times when you have to touch things. But you really need to look at how can I touch things less? And how can I eliminate as much work as possible? What am I touching every single day that I don’t need to be? We need to start acting like business owners and that requires us to start looking at things differently. We need to start putting all these things through that “simplicity filter” because that simplicity is going to allow us to grow in the long term.
As a reminder, this is what I do. This is what I teach and simplicity isn’t all of it, but I put everything through the lens of simplicity, sustainability, and scalability. Grow Business and Marketing Academy gets you a business that can continually grow without you giving more of yourself. I want to help you create a business that has no limits on how much money you can make. That doesn’t require you to run yourself into the ground to do that.
