Today we’re chatting about Threads. And if you’re not on Threads by the end of this episode, you might find that you want to be, or maybe the opposite will happen. Either way, in this short episode, I’m sharing my experience with the platform and giving you just a few nuggets of information that I know you’ll find helpful. There are some cool things about it that I think most people could implement in a way that would benefit their business.
In case you’re not familiar, Threads is attached to Instagram. It is a lot like Twitter or X, in that it’s primarily a text-only platform. You can post pictures and memes, but you can’t go live. There’s no stories, and there’s no DMs. You just post your thoughts, and engage with other people’s content and that’s pretty much it. If you are DMing someone, you are going through their profile. You’re clicking a little Instagram icon in that person’s profile and it will take you to Instagram. And that’s where you could potentially DM them. That’s the only way to get in direct contact with someone on Threads.
Getting traction
Threads initially caught my attention because I noticed that it was becoming the place where you could post more unfiltered thoughts. Naturally, if somebody was posting something really, really polarizing, then you could expect there to be tons of comments and mean girls in the comments. And let’s be honest, if you’re not on the receiving end of that, you’re just reading through the threads and being thoroughly entertained.
But what I began to realize is that the reach was really, really good. It allows you to get in front of people that are not following you on Instagram and that maybe didn’t even know you existed. I also realized that if you post content that draws some attention, you could get traction pretty quickly. When you’re reaching people that aren’t following you and those people are engaging and commenting and reposting, they’re also bouncing over to Instagram and they’re following you there, which is really cool.
The Strategy
The strategy is to get visible, the strategy is to feed my main platform, which is Instagram. The strategy is to activate some cold leads and make them a little bit warm. Catch people’s attention. The game is getting visible. You’ve got to get visible to your ideal client. And Threads is just kind of a fresh look at that especially because the reach and engagement is so excellent right now.
Content
The content that does best over there is shorter and it’s punchy. It’s a little polarizing. It’s hot takes and hard hitting statements. Those are the posts that have done the best and have gotten the highest engagement and the furthest reach. But you have to make sure that you’re not just randomly creating a hot take just for the sake of getting seen. It has to relate to what you are selling and relate to your niche and your ideal client. When you’re thinking about the long-form content that you create on Instagram, we’re just taking the juiciest parts of those pieces of content, rewording them slightly, and putting those on threads.
Start conversations
Another type of content that does really well on Threads are conversation starters and questions that provoke a response. We are strategically trying to create conversations that people want to be a part of. Anytime you’re asking someone about their story or you’re asking them a question about something that excites them, they’re more likely to answer that question. Anytime you’re making a statement that’s triggering, people are likely to comment, whether that is agree or disagree with you. Either way, that engagement skyrockets your visibility.
Long-form content
I do think that there’s room for longer-form content, but I think the topic would have to be really, really juicy and you’d have to hook them in, really strategically in order for them to read. This type of content is usually done by posting comments on your own post as a continuation of the post. The posts I’ve seen that do this best tell a compelling story.
If you’ve got some extra time, if you’re up for a challenge, if you’re getting a little frustrated with Instagram and haven’t seen growth in forever, give Threads a try. And when you head over there, follow me and say hi!
