Listen when your business feels heavy and you feel uninspired

Ever have those days (or weeks, or months) where your business feels more like a burden than the dream you signed up for? Recently, I had a heart-to-heart with a client that sparked an important conversation we need to have more openly in the entrepreneurial space. Because here’s the truth: sometimes your business just doesn’t excite you anymore, and that’s actually more normal than you might think.

The Reality Check: It’s Not Just You

There’s a lot of messaging out there suggesting that if you’re not constantly excited about what you sell, something’s wrong. While alignment with your work matters, this black-and-white thinking can create unnecessary shame when you’re going through a natural low period. Your lack of enthusiasm doesn’t mean you’re failing or that something’s fundamentally wrong with your business – it might just mean you’re human.

External Factors Matter More Than We Acknowledge

Here’s what most business coaches aren’t talking about: your external life circumstances hugely impact your business energy. Whether you’re dealing with family challenges, mental health struggles, physical health issues, or relationship difficulties, these external factors can drain your creative energy and enthusiasm. Remember, you are the primary resource of your business – when you’re depleted, your business feels it too.

Practical Steps for Heavy Seasons

Self-Care Starts Small

Forget the idea that self-care means expensive spa days or weekend retreats. Start small: a 10-minute morning walk, putting your phone away to read before bed, or simply drinking more water and getting more sleep. These minor adjustments can create major shifts in your energy and clarity.

Create Structure When Motivation Is Low

When you’re in a fog, structure becomes your best friend. Create strict schedules and detailed task lists. Working from discipline rather than motivation is key – and guess what? Even after years in business, I still show up about 50% of the time when I’d rather not. That’s just part of being a business owner.

Maintain Momentum Without Burning Out

During tough seasons, focus on maintaining rather than growing. Keep the essential money-making activities going, even if you need to scale back on new initiatives. This might mean spending just 15 minutes a day on lead generation or client nurturing. The key is finding a sustainable rhythm that honors both your current capacity and your business needs.

The Permission Slip You Need

Here’s what I want you to understand: it’s okay if things don’t feel amazing right now. You can simultaneously acknowledge that this is a challenging season AND keep showing up for your business. This isn’t a permanent state, but fighting against it often makes it worse. Give yourself grace while maintaining the discipline to keep the essential pieces moving.

Moving Forward

Remember, this advice isn’t a permanent permission slip to take your foot off the gas indefinitely. There are consequences to completely letting go for too long. Instead, think of this as a framework for navigating the natural ebbs and flows of business ownership while taking care of yourself in the process.
