This word “mindset” gets thrown around a lot and at first, I kind of rolled my eyes about how much everyone was talking about it. But, the deeper I get into growing my online business, the more I’ve come to realize that mindset is everything! You can have the best skillset in the world, but if your mindset stinks, so will your online business.
If you are new to the online business space let me clue you in on why you are going to hear this a LOT.
Building an online business may look easy from the outside, but I’m here to tell you that this is hard work. This will be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. You are going to want to quit, you are going to question why you started, you are going to feel lonely and isolated at times and you are going to feel like no one understands what you’re doing. You are going to be faced with the choice every day to show up or quit.
93% of all online businesses fail in the first 120 days!
I’m going to venture to bet that 93% did not plan on failing, and I also believe that most were really excited about their business at the beginning. But somewhere along the line, something failed, and I’m guessing it might have something to do with mindset.
Our mind is an incredible thing. It literally controls everything we do. It is designed to keep us safe in every aspect of our lives. So, when we decide to do something out of the norm or something that takes us out of our comfort zone, our brain will try to pull us back to what is safe and familiar. Every time you step into something that takes you out of your box your brain experiences growing pains and it will fight against what you are trying to accomplish to keep you safe.
Ok, so where’s the good news?
You can retrain your brain and mindset to work for you, not against you! Stepping outside of your box every day is going to be your new normal, learning, growing, and doing is going to be what your mind gets used to.
Here are a few things every aspiring entrepreneur needs to know:
Nothing happens overnight. If you start your online business with the expectation that you are going to be wildly successful in a matter of weeks, you will set yourself up for some major disappointment.
This is going to be HARD. If you don’t want to put in the work, then I’m telling you right now, you are going to fall into that 93% failure rate. Building a business is not for the faint of heart and certainly not for the lazy. If you’re choosing to start an online business because you think it’s the easy way out of corporate, think again. Although, there are many benefits to owning your own business it is not going to be easier, at least not right away.
No one cares as much as you do. NO ONE. Not your significant other, parents, siblings or friends. You must not take this personally. This is your journey, not theirs. You are going to work really hard towards something that perhaps many of those closest to you won’t really understand. I want you to know that this is normal, and perfectly okay, which brings me to my next point.
You need to find a new group of friends. No, I’m not talking about ditching your old friends, but you do need to get into a group of people that are all striving towards the same thing. This could look like joining Facebook groups, masterminds, hiring a business coach, or finding an accountability partner. This is life to your business and your mind. Do not underestimate what can happen to your mindset when you surround yourself with others who want the same things as you do.
Personal Development. This is huge, and personally what helped me to gain the mindset that propelled me forward in my business. Start feeding your brain with self-development podcasts, books, and webinars. I know that was a little heavy, but I want to be honest with you, although this all may seem unattainable from where you are sitting, it most certainly is not! You can achieve the same level of success as those you aspire to. You can do anything you set your mind to, you can build an online business and you can succeed!
