Picture this: You’re three to five years into your business, revenue isn’t where you want it to be, your pipeline feels empty, and you’re working way too many hours for way too little return. You’re discouraged, maybe even a little defeated. If you were my sister, here’s exactly what I’d tell you: the tough truth you need to hear.
Because here’s the thing: I see so many business owners stuck in this exact phase, spinning their wheels and wondering why nothing’s working. The truth? You’re probably doing everything except the things that actually move the needle. So let’s talk about what’s really going on and how to fix it.
You’re Not Prioritizing Your Money-Making Activities
Let me be blunt: if you want consistent money, you need to consistently be marketing. Period.
I know life happens. Summer happens, vacations happen, family emergencies and health scares happen. But if you want consistent revenue, you have to consistently prioritize your money-making activities. Create a plan, create a strategy, figure out what it’s going to look like every single day for you, and stick to it.
You cannot expect your business to just continue growing without marketing efforts. It’s like expecting a garden to flourish without watering it. Reassess every 30 to 60 days, tweak what’s not working, and keep going.
Your Content Is Boring (And You Know It)
“But I am consistently marketing! I’m creating content all the time!” Sound familiar?
Here’s the tough truth: you’re not attracting your ideal client because no one is stopping to read your content. It’s vanilla. There’s nothing special about it. Your hooks are generic, they don’t create enough curiosity or interest, and there’s nothing that speaks clearly to your ideal client.
Think about yourself as a consumer. You know what makes you stop scrolling, you know what makes you click, you know what makes you buy. You are not the exception to the rule. If you want to be the person getting 15 comments on their posts with people saying “I need this,” then you need to show up like that person.
You don’t get a pass on creating generic content just because it used to work. You have to step up your content game – it’s a necessity, not a nice-to-have.
You’re Bleeding Time Without Realizing It
“I just don’t have time to market properly.” I hear this constantly, and I believe you. Time is precious and fleeting. This is tough to hear but you need margin, and if you don’t have time to market in a way that actually moves the needle, you’ve got to figure out how to put more time in your day.
For most of you, that means streamlining, releasing control, and outsourcing. So many people are bleeding minutes, if not hours, every single day because they’re jumping from one thing to another like a ping pong ball.
You sit down, open your email, respond to one message, get distracted by Instagram, realize you need to post something, scroll for ideas, get pinged by Slack, remember that client thing you need to do – and suddenly the day is gone with nothing substantial accomplished.
You have to get structured, you have to get disciplined. If you want things to change in your business, this is non-negotiable.
You’re Not Actually Selling
Here’s my last piece of tough love: How much are you really selling? Not sprinkling CTAs here and there, but actually selling?
I had a client who spent two weeks promoting a local award nomination, asking people to vote every single day, sometimes multiple times a day. She was relentless about it. And you know what? It worked. People voted because they saw it enough times to remember and take action.
But when I asked her if she promoted her services with the same intensity, the answer was no. And that’s the problem.
You need concentrated selling periods – two weeks where every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, you’re talking about your offer. Who it’s for, why they should buy it, what transformation it provides. People need to see an offer at least seven times (some say 21 times) before they feel comfortable buying, even as an ideal client who’s ready to purchase.
The people who get annoyed by your selling? They weren’t going to buy anyway. The people who need what you offer will thank you for reminding them.
You’re More In Control Than You Think
Sometimes these tough changes can feel overwhelming, but you are in control. You absolutely are. It takes work, effort, and consistency to do the things you need to do to sustain and grow a business. But you are in control of that.
Prioritize your money-making activities. Create margin in your schedule. Button up your systems and boundaries. Create really good, specific content that speaks directly to your ideal client. And sell consistently and strategically.
You’re going to be good – better than good – but you’ve got to do these things.
