Business and Emotional Capacity

You are exhausted, and it is not because you are lazy or undisciplined or bad at running your business. It is because you are holding weight that was never yours to hold in the first place. I sat down with a client recently who was frustrated with herself because she “just can’t” do what she knows she needs to do in her business. And here is what I told her, and what I need you to hear too: this was never about whether you’re capable. You are. This is about capacity, and capacity is not unlimited.

Your business is one bucket on a very full plate

Building and growing a business is a lot on its own. Systems, marketing, clients, team, admin — that is already a full workload. But your business is not the only thing on your plate. You are running a household., you might be homeschooling. You might be caring for a sick parent or a child with a disability. Your business is one bucket among many, and when the other buckets overflow, your business is usually the one that gets neglected first. That is not a character flaw. That is math.

Capable is not the same as capacity

I talk constantly about showing up for your business like it matters, because it does. You cannot treat it like a hobby and expect six-figure results. But I also need you to know that I understand why so many of you struggle to do what you know you need to do. It is not a mystery. You are mentally, emotionally, and physically tapped, and you are doing the best you can with what you have left. The women I work with are not okay settling there, though. They are not willing to put themselves and their businesses on the back burner indefinitely. They want a path forward, and that path starts with understanding where your time and energy are actually going.

Your personal life and your business life are not separate rooms

A lot of my clients hesitate to bring their personal life into our conversations. They think of it as separate, like it does not belong in a business conversation. I tell them to tell me everything, and not because I am nosy. You are one human being with a lot of different facets, and your personal life and your business life integrate whether you plan for that or not. You cannot open one door, shut another, and expect there to be no crosswind between them. When I sat down with my client and she laid out everything going on in her life, what became clear was that she was carrying responsibility that was never hers to carry.

What is actually yours to carry

Here is where I want you to get honest with yourself. You are not obligated to give past your capacity, especially when it does not involve your child or your spouse. If you were not there to handle something, someone else would step in and it would be okay. But instead, you took it on. You made someone else’s burden your own, and now you are carrying it as if it were never optional.

If your responsibilities are your spouse, if you have one, and your children, if you have them, then that is your core list. Everything else needs to be examined. Is it truly yours, or is it something you inherited from how you were raised, or from a belief system that told you your worth was measured by how much you gave with no regard for yourself? In the Christian community I grew up in, the message was give, give, give, with no attention paid to what you needed to function. That belief will put you last on your own list every single time, and depending on your personality and your upbringing, it might feel non-negotiable. It is not.

The cost of carrying what isn’t yours

When you carry what is not yours, you fall last. Every time. Your mental health, your physical health, your happiness, and your business all take the hit, because there is only so much of you to go around. This is not selfish to say out loud. You matter. What you need matters. Your business matters. And none of that gets to keep waiting while you manage everyone else’s obligations.

Boundary work is business work

This is nuanced, and I know it. For some of you, this conversation belongs in therapy, and if you do not have a therapist, I want you to go find one. This is inner work, not a one-time epiphany. Boundary work is directly connected to how much you value yourself, and that value shows up in your business whether you realize it or not. Get clear on what is genuinely yours to carry and what you have been carrying out of guilt, habit, or obligation. That clarity is what frees up the mental and physical capacity to actually build the business you want.

You are allowed to go after it

You matter. What you need matters, what you want matters. What you desire matters, and you are allowed to go after all of it without waiting for permission or for your plate to magically clear itself.
