Marketing Strategy vs. Tactics

Your evergreen funnel ran beautifully for six months. Then it went quiet. You didn’t get lazy and you didn’t forget how to market. You lost a tactic, and somewhere along the way you started treating that tactic like your strategy.

That mix-up is why so many business owners get stuck forcing something that used to work. Once you see the difference between marketing strategy and marketing tactics, you stop panicking every time a platform, a trend, or the economy shifts. You keep the core steady and change the tools around it.

Your Marketing Strategy Is Three Steps

It doesn’t matter if you’re a coach, a consultant, or a service provider. It doesn’t matter if you work in person or online. The core process is the same for every business owner: find your ideal clients, nurture them, and sell to them.

That is your marketing strategy. It stays fixed. Everything else is a way of carrying it out.

Step One: Get in Front of Your Ideal Clients

If you are not getting in front of new ideal clients, your business will die. That’s blunt, and it’s true.

There are plenty of ways to do this. You can pitch podcasts, network, join communities and do guest expert appearances, or take a billboard approach in Facebook groups. My favorite method is going out to find clients instead of waiting for them to find you. Pick a few methods under this step and commit to them.

Step Two: Nurture the People Who Already Know You

This step has nothing to do with a social media platform. It’s about the people who already know you exist. You connect with them, build trust, and build authority.

How you nurture depends on where your clients are. If your ideal clients are on social media and following you, the connection comes through content and conversations in the DMs. If they aren’t active online, nurturing becomes a direct follow-up approach.

I see this in my own businesses. In my marketing business, trust gets built online through content and conversations. In my cleaning business, I keep the relationship alive by following up after that first email or DM. Same step, different tactic.

Step Three: Sell to the People You’ve Built Trust With

Selling is the part many people skip or fumble. You need a method for it. That might be an evergreen funnel, promotional periods, daily selling, or email pitches, whichever is the best way to reach your ideal client.

The offer and the audience decide the method. The step itself never goes away.

Run All Three Steps at the Same Time

This is not a linear checklist. You don’t get your leads first, nurture second, and sell third. You do all three repeatedly and simultaneously.

That overlap is what keeps your pipeline full of ideal clients, and a full pipeline is what lets you book clients consistently.

Tactics Are Supposed to Change

Industry shifts, new technology, changing buyer behavior, the economy, and the political climate all affect what works. A tactic that performed for six months can stop overnight.

When that happens, the move is to tweak it or try something else. That’s what tactics are for. A year from now there may be a tactic I’ve never heard of, built on a technology or trend that doesn’t exist yet. Try it if your current approach has stalled, but don’t get hung up on it. A new tactic is not a new strategy.

“Post Three Times a Week” Is Not a Strategy

Posting three times a week is an activity. So is generating leads three times a week. Neither one tells you who you’re reaching, how you’re building trust, or how you’re making the sale.

A real marketing strategy is more specific. Write your three steps down, then customize each one for what you sell and who you serve. If I opened a Google doc titled “Marketing Strategy for Sarah,” it would have those three headings with her chosen methods under each. That level of detail is what produces consistent results.

Keep the Core, Flex the Tactics

Your marketing strategy has a fixed part and a flexible part. The fixed part is find, nurture, sell. The flexible part is every method you use to do those things, and you’re allowed to shift and evolve it whenever the market does.

Thinking this way frees you from clinging to what used to work. You stop forcing a tactic that has run its course, and you stop treating every new trend like an emergency.

My goal is to help you fill your pipeline with leads so you can book clients and make money consistently, without working full-time hours to do it.
