Here’s a question that’s going to make you uncomfortable: How bad do you want it? Not just “want it” in that dreamy, someday-maybe way. I’m talking about the bone-deep, do-whatever-it-takes kind of wanting. The kind that has you choosing the hard work of building over the harder reality of being broke. Because here’s what I’m seeing everywhere online right now – a whole lot of whining about how difficult it is to build a business, and not nearly enough people willing to do what actually needs to be done.
Stop Making Excuses and Start Making Choices
I get it. I really do. The climate is different now. Depending on your industry, things might feel pretty dry. Competition is fierce, and what used to work with less effort doesn’t cut it anymore. But here’s my question: Are we still willing to figure it out? Or are we just going to keep complaining?
One of my clients told me something that stopped me in my tracks. She said, “Every time I have a bad day and think ‘Can I do this one more day?’, I quickly imagine myself working in a cubicle, nine to five, Monday through Friday, asking permission to take off for my son’s field trip. That snaps me right back into reality.”
That’s the mindset shift you need. If working a traditional job sounds appealing to you right now, then entrepreneurship probably isn’t your path – and that’s okay. But if the thought of asking permission for your life makes your skin crawl, then stop acting like you have unlimited choices when you don’t.
Choose Your Hard
Everything in life is hard – but you get to choose which hard you want to deal with. It’s always going to be harder to be broke than to work a little extra to make sure you’re not broke. Money stress is one of the worst kinds of stress, and if you’ve been living with it, I need you to get fed up.
Here’s the truth bomb: You’re holding yourself back. You’re blocking yourself from the business you could have because you’re coming up with reasons why you can’t instead of focusing on how you will.
The Reality Check You Need
If you need the revenue your business currently brings in, if you need the time freedom and flexibility to work from home, then what choice do you really have? Stop acting like you have endless options when the reality is you have very few good ones.
And here’s something that might sting: Not doing what you need to do is burning you out more than actually doing it would. Read that again. The mental gymnastics of avoiding the work that would grow your business is more exhausting than just doing the work.
Time Audit: Where Are Those 10 Minutes Really Going?
If I did a real audit of your time – and trust me, I’m including myself in this – I’d find pockets of time you could be using differently. Not your Netflix time or family time, but those 10 minutes you spend scrolling instead of picking up the camera and creating content.
I know this isn’t fun to hear because our natural instinct is to get defensive. But ask yourself honestly: What are your actual alternatives? Write them down. Look at them. Are they better than pushing through the discomfort of building your business?
Strategy vs. Perfectionism
Here’s where I see so many entrepreneurs getting stuck – they’re confusing strategy with perfectionism. You need to be strategic, absolutely. But you don’t need to perfect every piece of content before you put it out there.
I’m currently doing a TikTok challenge – 100 posts in 30 days. I’m at 53 posts on day 18, I’ve gained 142 followers (80% ideal clients), gotten sales, and sparked DM conversations. Most of my posts take 10 minutes flat because it doesn’t have to be complicated.
As long as your messaging is correct, you have a clear target for what you want people to do, and your content supports your offers – you’re good to go. Turn on the camera and talk.
The All-In Mentality
In today’s saturated online space, we have to be willing to go to the next level. If you’ve been in business for a while and remember when things were easier, this shift might be difficult to wrap your head around. But maybe you need to simplify your business so you have more time to market effectively.
Would you create four pieces of content a day if that’s what it took? Would you send one email daily, attend one networking event weekly, and send 25 warm emails? If I told you that’s what you needed to do to save your business, would you figure it out?
The Bottom Line
We’re either going to figure this out, or we’re not. And if we don’t figure it out, the alternative won’t be our choice – it’ll be forced on us. I’ve seen businesses crumble because owners didn’t have the flexibility to rebuild or find five clients in a month. They had to go back to traditional work, and suddenly they had no time to build their business. It was just gone.
Don’t let that be you.
