You know that feeling when you’re hitting $5K months consistently, but somehow $8K or $10K feels impossibly out of reach? Like there’s an invisible ceiling you keep bumping your head against? You’re not alone, and you’re definitely not doing anything wrong. But if you’ve been feeling stuck, it’s because there are specific patterns keeping you trapped in what I call the “$5K month jail” – and today we’re breaking you out.
The truth is, getting to six figures doesn’t actually require $10K months (though those are nice). You can hit six figures with consistent $8K-$9K months. But if you’re stuck hovering around $5K-$6K, there are some very specific things happening in your business that are acting like invisible handcuffs. Let’s talk about what they are and how to fix them.
You’re Offering Too Many Things (Or Too Many Variations)
This one hits hard because it feels like you’re being helpful and flexible. But here’s what’s really happening: you think you have two simple offers, but those two offers are actually customized eight different ways for different clients.
The result? Your internal hourly rate is terrible, you’re working all the time, and you have zero time to market your business. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps you buried in client work with no bandwidth to grow.
Even coaches fall into this trap. Maybe you offer one main service, but you’re spending way too much time on “extras” like checking Voxer five times a day or offering features that eat up your time without adding real value.
Your Hourly Packages Are Too Low (And Boxing You In)
I see this constantly with both service providers and coaches. You’re either charging too little per hour, or you’re stuck in the hourly mindset altogether. When you offer “20-hour packages” or “6 coaching sessions,” you’re literally capping your own revenue.
Here’s what I recommend instead: scope-based packaging. Instead of selling hours, you’re selling outcomes. “Here’s what I’m doing for you this month: X, Y, and Z, and I get paid a flat rate.” This feels more valuable to clients and prevents the dreaded scope creep that kills your profitability.
For coaches, this might look like a monthly retainer for calls and support rather than charging per session. The key is making money without directly tying it to how many hours you personally work.
You Don’t Have Time to Market Your Business
This connects directly to being buried in the weeds of client work. You’re so busy delivering that you can’t generate the leads needed to bring in new (better-paying) clients. It’s the classic catch-22: you can’t take on more work, but you can’t let go of current work to make space for marketing.
When you’re in this position, something has to give. Sometimes that means working extra hours temporarily – mornings, nights, weekends – to create marketing time. Other times it means letting go of a client who’s not a good fit financially, taking the short-term hit to make space for a much better client.
Getting out of the $5K month jail will require you to do something uncomfortable. That’s normal, and everyone else has to deal with this stuff too.
Your Systems Live in Your Brain
If most of your processes, procedures, and boundaries exist only in your head, you’re constantly reinventing the wheel. Every time a client misses a payment, you’re typing up that email from scratch. Every new project starts from zero instead of following a proven system.
You need Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and I know it’s boring. But you can’t run your business like a freelancer and expect to make money like a CEO.
Start by identifying the buckets: admin tasks, marketing and content creation, lead generation, client delivery. What are the normal tasks you do daily, weekly, monthly in each area? Those become your SOPs.
Here’s why this connects to offering too many things: if you’re serving different types of clients in different ways, creating SOPs becomes nearly impossible. Simple business starts with simple offers.
Your Communication Has No Boundaries
How much time do you waste on communication? Checking your inbox, Slack, Voxer throughout the day? Your communication policies need to be crystal clear: How often do you check messages? What’s your turnaround time on emails? What’s your response time for requests?
Your boundaries matter too: no calls on Fridays, one revision included, late payment fees after seven days. But here’s the crucial part – you have to stick to your own boundaries for clients to respect them.
The first month with any new client is when you set these expectations. If you start saying “sure, no problem” to every request outside your scope, you’re creating a monster. I just worked with a client who had a “runaway train” situation in week one with a new client because boundaries weren’t established immediately.
Yes, having these conversations can be uncomfortable. But 90% of the time, when you communicate clearly and professionally, clients understand and respect the boundaries.
You’re Overwhelmed and Frozen
When you’re stuck at a revenue plateau, overwhelm often creates a kind of paralysis. There’s usually burnout, money fears, and anxiety all swirling together. You can see what needs to change, but it feels impossible to tackle it all.
Here’s the truth: you can’t fix everything tomorrow, next week, or even next month. But you can pick one thing. Maybe October’s goal is repackaging your services. November’s goal is creating admin SOPs. December is establishing communication policies.
It’s methodical, intentional, and strategic. If you’re newer in business, set it up right the first time. If you’re already in the messy middle, it’s absolutely possible to untangle things – you just have to take it one step at a time.
Breaking out of the $5K month trap isn’t about working harder – it’s about working differently. It requires systems, boundaries, strategic thinking, and yes, some uncomfortable changes. But every single one of these shifts will compound to create the business freedom you’re craving.
The messy middle is real, and the baby steps matter more than you think. Keep your eye on the vision while you tackle each piece systematically.
